“We shall find it a pleasure to browse around the shelves"
Bourne End Library opened on 31 May 1967. Target Magazine noted that “We shall find it a pleasure to browse around the shelves in this new, attractive building, with its contemporary furniture and fittings”. It got off to a great start: on the opening day, staff issued 410 junior and 233 adult books in three hours! The local community continued to show their enthusiasm, borrowing 21,938 books in the first two months. Mr Bently is quoted in Target Magazine saying that, “...those connected with the Library are very happy with the results”.
Bourne End Library now loans DVDs, games, audiobooks, magazines and even jigsaws, as well as books. Its services have expanded over the years, with regular events for all ages, talks and reading groups, to name but a few.
With all this increased activity, we needed a larger building! Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund, plans were made for an extension to the original building in 2007. The Jackson Mill, Soho Mill and Lantern Rooms were formally opened on 10 October 2009, ensuring that the Library will continue to be an, “attractive building with contemporary furniture and fittings”, for many more years to come. This extension proved to be the perfect home for the valuable archive material collected by local historian Brian Wheals and donated to the library by his wife Ann.
Since 20xx it has been a Community Library, with professional library staff provided by Bucks County Council working alongside local volunteers. Find out more about how you can get involved and support your local library. (link to how you can help page)
